FELTED CHILD’S
BOOTS (about 2 years old)
(Boot soles are about 5 ½” long after felting –changes for 1 yr.
size below)
Wool (d.k. or sport
weight) 4 ounces (or 2 ounces of 2 different colors)
Knitting needles Size

The entire boot is
worked holding 2 STRANDS OF YARN TOGETHER.
Gauge: about 2 ½ sts.
= 1 inch.
CUFF:
Cast on 32 stitches.
Work in garter stitch for 4 rows (2 ‘ridges’).
Knit in stockinette stitch for 8 more rows (12 rows total).
Work an eyelet row:
(K1, K2 tog, yo twice, K1) across.
Purl back, working only 1 purl in each double yarn over.
K 1 row, Purl 1 row.
INSTEP:
Knit across 21 stitches. Turn. Do not finish row. Purl back across 10
stitches only. Turn.
Work back and forth on these center (instep) stitches for 8 more rows.
Next row: K 2 tog.,
K 6, Knit 2 tog, Do Not Turn… Pick up and knit 6 stitches on the left
side of the instep. Knit across left side 11 stitches. Turn. Purl back
across the bootie and this time pick up and purl 6 stitches when you get
to the other side of the instep. (42 sts. total).
FOOT:
Work garter stitch for 8 rows (four ridges).
SOLE:
Knit 2 tog, K 17, Knit 2 tog, Knit 2 tog, K 17, Knit 2 tog.
Purl back.
K 2 tog, K 15, Knit 2 tog, Knit 2 tog, K 15, Knit 2 tog.
Purl back.
K 2 tog, K 13, Knit 2 tog, Knit 2 tog, K 13, Knit 2 tog.
Purl across ONLY HALF
of the remaining 30 sts. (15).
Fold the sole in
half, wrong sides together, and weave seam, then sew up center back seam.
Make a second bootie
to match. Make two ties by crocheting a chain with two strands together
for about 30 inches.
Place both booties
and ties into a lengerie or mesh bag and wash in hot soapy water until
well felted.
Use a metal skewer to
open up the eyelet holes enough to thread the ties through. Shape the
boots well and air dry.
FELTED
BOOTIES
(Child’s size 6 months to 1 year)
Follow the
instructions as written for the boot, but use ONE strand of yarn and
size 11 needles. The gauge is about 3 sts = 1 inch.
One year booties take
2 ounces of Dk/sport weight yarn (total).
Make the ties only 25”
long.
The finished booties
(before felting) are about 8 inches long from toe to heel, and about 5
inches long after felting (4 inches at the very bottom of the sole).
