THE PURL STITCH

1. Move your yarn forward (towards you) to the front of your work.

2. Insert the right needle from the back (away from you) of the first stitch on the left needle to the front (towards you). Keep the yarn below your right needle.

3. Pull the needle over the yarn (towards you) - then in a down-ward motion, move your right needle toward the back of the work (away from you).

4. Push the right needle away from you, bringing the working yarn with it. The yarn will now be wrapped around your right needle, making a new stitch.

5. Lift the new stitch you just made through the loop and pull your right-hand needle towards the right (not too hard!) bringing the old stitch off the left-hand needle!

This is the "Continental" -or- "pick knitting" way of doing a purl stitch! It is quite speedy when you get the hang of it!
