BEGINNING KNITTER SCARF PATTERN
A SAMPLER SCARF!

MATERIALS:

Worsted Weight yarn -- about 6 ounces total.

Knitting needles size 8.

Gauge: may vary….a very flexible pattern, you could get about 4 sts. to the inch, but anything remotely close to that is fine!

Cast on 28 sts.

Knit in garter stitch (knit every row) for 8 rows (4 “ridges”).

Place a pin-type marker on the “front” of the scarf to help you to know when to change stitches. YOU WILL BE KEEPING THE FIRST AND LAST FOUR STITCHES IN GARTER STITCH (knit every row) FOR THE ENTIRE SCARF!!!! -- while you continue working the center 20 stitches in “Basket Weave Stitch”

for 16 rows.

BASKET WEAVE STITCH (4X4)

Row 1:  (Knit 4, Purl 4) across. This is a right side row – the side with your marker.

Row 2:  (Purl 4, Knit 4) across. (Knit your knits and purl your purls as they face you).

Rows 3 & 4: Repeat rows 1 & 2.

Row 5:  (Purl 4, Knit 4) across. (Purl your knits and knit your purls as they face you).

Row 6:  (Knit 4, Purl 4) across. (Knit your knits and purl your purls as they face you).

Rows 7 & 8:  Repeat rows 5 & 6.

Repeat these 8 rows for desired number of rows – 16 rows total for this scarf.

Change the center 20 stitches of scarf to “Double Seed Stitch” for 16 rows.

DOUBLE SEED STITCH

Row 1:  (K1/P1) across.

Row 2:  Repeat row 1.

Row 3: (P1/K1) across. (Purl your knits and knit your purls). A     RIGHT SIDE row.

Row 4: Repeat row 3.

Repeat these 4 rows for desired number of rows – 16 rows total for this scarf.

Now change the center 20 stitches to “Stockinette Stitch” for 16 rows.

STOCKINETTE (or “Stocking”) STITCH

Row 1:  Knit across.

Row 2:  Purl across.  Repeat these 2 rows for desired number of rows – 16 for scarf.

Continue working on scarf, repeating the center sections until the scarf is the desired length to your shoulder.  Change the center 20 stitches to Knit 2/Purl 2 ribbing.

KNIT 2/PURL 2 RIBBING

Row 1:  (Knit 2, Purl 2) across.

Repeat the last row, always knitting your knits and purling our purls, until desired length.  For this scarf, work enough ribbing to go from one shoulder, around the back of your neck, to the other shoulder….about 6 to 6 ½ inches of ribbing.

Resume the second side of the scarf to match the first half.  Finish with 8 rows of garter stitch

(four “ridges”).  Bind off.  Add fringes if desired.

CHARTS FOR STITCHES:
