CABLE CROSSING

TWO STITCH TWIST

The 2-stitch twist is exactly what the name implies: 2 stitches that are twisted!
In the cable hat lessons you will be doing the 2-stitch twist on either side of your 6-stitch cable, separated by 2 purl (reverse stockinette) stitches.

The twisted stitches look like a mini-cable.  The are always flanked on either side by rev. st. st. (purl stitches), so that the mini-cable stands out and has a more three-dimensional look.

Work the desired stitches on your work up to the two stitches that you want to twist.

FOR A RIGHT SLANT TWIST:
Insert your cable needle into the first stitch and hold it to the BACK of your work.
Knit the next stitch on your left needle, then knit the stitch from your cable needle.

FOR A LEFT SLANT TWIST:
Insert your cable needle into the first stitch and hold it to the FRONT of your work.
Knit the next stitch on your left needle, then knit the stitch from your cable needle.

TO MAKE THE 2-STITCH TWIST WITHOUT A CABLE NEEDLE:

RIGHT TWIST
Insert your right needle over the front of the first stitch on the left needle, and into the second stitch.
Knit this second stitch, but DO NOT TAKE IT OFF THE LEFT NEEDLE.

Now go back and insert you right needle into the first stitch, the one you passed over, and knit it.

Lift both stitches off the left needle.

LEFT TWIST

Go behind the first stitch on the left needle and insert your right needle into the second stitch. Knit this second stitch, but DO NOT TAKE IT OFF THE LEFT NEEDLE.

Now come back around to the front and insert your right needle into the first stitch, the one you passed over, and knit it. Lift both stitches off the left needle.

Here you have it!

On your wrong side rows you will always purl the twisted stitches, and on every right side row you will twist the two stitches.  Make sure that you always twist the same two stitches in the same direction every time!

You will use this technique when knitting strip one of the hat in lesson 2!
