KNITTING WITH COLOR

STRANDING

You will need two colors for this swatch, a main color, and a contrasting color for the snowflake.  The swatch will be worked by knitting back and forth.

With main color cast on 31 stitches.  Work in garter stitch (knit every row) for 4 rows.
Work 2 more rows keeping beginning and ending 2 stitches in garter stitch and center 27 stitches in stockinette stitch.

You will work the snowflake chart from right to left on knit rows and left to right on purl rows.  The snowflake chart is 23 stitches wide, so you will center it on your swatch. You will have 2 stitches of stockinette stitch on either side of the chart (besides the garter stitch border).

Row 1:  Knit 5 (MC), K1 (CC), K7 (MC), K1 (CC), K3 (MC), K1 (CC), K8 (MC), K1(CC), K 4 (MC).

Continue following chart.  Remember:

  • Carry the unused color LOOSELY across the back!
  • Be sure the first row is CORRECT! It is your foundation!
  • Do not strand the yarn across more than 3 stitches.
  • Use the “post-it” markers to keep track of your progress.
  • MnM’s (plain) help with frustration

If you need to carry a color MORE than three stitches, you must twist your colors. Strands carried longer than three stitches will catch on things when a stranded garment is worn.  There are several ways (and probably more besides!) to wrap your colors when you need to:

  • Rotate the yarn balls around each other.
  • Rotate the knitting swatch clockwise or counterclockwise.
  • Wrap the yarn completely around the knitting.
  • “Lift” and “lower” unused yarn while knitting desired color.
