GRANNIE LINDA'S PIANO SOCKS

PIANO SOCKS

 Materials:
2 ounces of sport weight white yarn.
1/2 oz. of sport weight black yarn.
(Yarn used for model: Patons “Astra”)

Knitting needles size 3 (or size to give gauge) either a set of double points or 2 circular needles.

Gauge: 6 stitches = 1 inch

 

 

 

Cuff:
With BLACK cast on 52 stitches and divide evenly between needles of choice (3 double point needles or 2 circular needles).
Work in Knit 1/Purl 1 ribbing for 14 rounds.  Decrease one stitch somewhere in the sock to bring the total stitches to 51. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) for 1/2 inch (about 4 rounds).

Chart instructions: Follow chart from bottom right hand column (do not count the
column with numbers – the numbers indicate row number).
Repeat 17 stitches of chart  THREE times. Black columns are TWO stiches wide!

Continue to knit with WHITE only for 1 1/4 inches (about 11 rounds).

Heel:
On 25 of the stitches only, work back and forth to form heel flap:
Row 1: {K1, slip 1} across. End with a Knit one.
Row 2:  Purl across.
Repeat these two rows until 26 rows have been worked, and end with a right side row.

Turn heel:
Row 1: Purl 14, purl 2 tog, purl 1, turn. (8 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.)
Row 2: Sl 1, Knit 5, knit 2 tog, knit 1, turn. (7 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.)
Row 3: Sl 1, Purl 6, purl 2 tog, purl 1, turn. (6 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.
Row 4: Sl 1, Knit 7, knit 2 tog, knit 1, turn. (5 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.)Row 5: Sl 1, Purl 8, purl 2 tog, purl 1, turn. (4 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.)Row 6: Sl 1, Knit 9, knit 2 tog, knit 1, turn. (3 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.)Row 7: Sl 1, Purl 10, purl 2 tog, purl 1, turn.(2 stitches remain unworked on the left needle.)Row 8: Sl 1, Knit 11, knit 2 tog, knit 1, turn. Gusset:
Now go back to knitting in rounds by picking up and knitting14 stitches along the left side of the heel flap as the front of the heel flap faces you.
Knit across 26 instep stitches.
Pick up and knit 13 stitches along the right side of the heel flap. You should have a total of 68 stitches.
Work gusset decreases on bottom (sole) half of sock: 1 decrease at each side, every other row 8 times. You should have 52 stitches.

Body:
Continue knitting in just the white until sock is 1 1/2 inches shorter than you want the total length to be. Work toe decreases by decreasing on instep and sole at each end every other row until 24 stitches remain total. {7 decrease rows}.
